LIFE LESSONS FROM A DOG
Dale Choquette N.D., L.B.E.
If you have ever had a pet you know what joy and pleasure they can bring
to your life. They have so much to teach us.
My precious dog Micha passed on last week. She was sixteen and had a
long and happy life. Throughout her years with us she taught us about
having faith. When my husband was seriously ill in 1993, she was
constantly by my side. She knew when I was afraid. She would put her paw
on my leg as if to say “everything will be all right”. I could feel what
she was telling me and it gave me hope.
She taught us about forgiveness. Dogs do something wrong, and you get
angry with them. Then they give you that “look”. The one that says,
“What did I do? The anger immediately dissipates and you realize that
getting angry was silly. We should be that way with each other and learn
to forgive.
She taught us about being happy. Dogs don’t look outside themselves for
happiness. They are innately happy. This is a big one. The more we look
outside ourselves for happiness, the less we find it. We need to drop
our barriers, and look inside ourselves, for that is where our true
happiness lies.
Dogs give unconditional love. They don’t expect anything in return from
us. Even if we do get angry at them, they hold no grievances. They just
continue to give us love.
We can learn a lot from our furred friends. All we need to do is to pay
attention to what they are teaching us. I truly believe that not only do
people come into our lives for a reason, but our pets do as well. Micha
came into our lives when we were facing some challenges. I am sure she
was an angel in disguise. When she left us, I felt her spirit in me, and
I still do. After all, we are all one. We are all the same only in
different disguises, whether we have a human form or are covered with
fur or feathers.
The next time you look at your pet, see him or her as a part of
yourself. Learn to look inside to find true happiness and give your love
unconditionally. These are wonderful life lessons. Be grateful for them.
